Stop the Violence - The Effects of Television With so much violence on TV, in the movies and in video games, it seems our children are becoming desensitized to violence at a very young age. According to a study done by the Parents Television Counsel, the amount of violence on primetime TV has increased by 75 percent since 1998. The effect of this violence on children has been examined in numerous studies, most of which conclude that children who watch violence on television are more likely to exhibit violent behavior.So what can you do as a parent? It starts with being aware of what your children are watching. It's great if you can set parental controls on your TV so that certain channels are blocked from your children, but that doesn't mean that something could slip past your notice. Television, movies and other media tend to glorify violence and do not show its actual effects. Children have a hard time discerning what is real from what is make-believe, so exposing them to violent television could make them believe that it is acceptable in real life.According to a study done by the Kaiser Family Foundation, two-thirds of television programming contains at least some violence, making it nearly impossible to avoid entirely. It's easier to handle with younger children, when Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel are still appealing and they find no need to wander to other channels. As children get older, however, they want to start watching more "grown-up" television, and for many of them this means TV shows with a lot of violence.The bottom line is: you are the parent. If you don't want them watching a certain program, they shouldn't be watching it. One way to keep tabs on what your kids are watching is to prohibit them from having a TV in their rooms. When they have their own televisions, not only are they more likely to watch TV instead of doing homework or playing outside, but they also have free reign to watch whatever they want. By keeping the television in a common area of the house, like the living room, you can go about your business and still keep an eye on what they are watching.It's hard to keep tabs on what they are watching all the time, such as when they are visiting a friend's house, but this is why it is equally important for you to have control of the remote in your own household. Try introducing them to some programs that you like that don't have a lot of violence or indecency, that way they will still feel like a grown-up but will not be subjected to these negative influences. Make sure they understand the difference between what happens on TV and what happens in real life. Chances are your children will see some violence in the media, but as long as they can tell the difference between what is real and what is fake they should not be affected by it.Solomon Brenner has been teaching martial arts to children and adults for ten years, and holds a 6th degree black belt in Kenpo Karate.
